In 2018 the appliance industry earned more than half a trillion dollars in sales worldwide. That shows just how much modern households rely on the use of dishwashers, microwaves, washers and dryers, and refrigerators. At All American Electric, we’ve installed and replaced hundreds of home appliances and can provide a few tips on how to select reliable, energy efficient devices.
Approximately 20% of energy costs for the average American household is used on home appliances. That explains why energy efficiency has been a hot topic for the past few years. The most common energy rating system in the US is the Energy Star Certification. These certifications are given to appliances that have proven to save more energy than their non-energy efficient counterparts. On average, the annual savings from an Energy Star certified appliance can total anywhere from 10% to 50% less energy consumed. This means that although energy efficient appliances come with a premium purchase price, the expense will be more than covered over the life of the device.
Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, LG, and Samsung make up the top 5 brands in the home appliance industry. These brands are known for being effective and reliable. However, some smaller brands can also provide excellent quality such as Bosch, Electrolux, and Speed Queen. When choosing an appliance, it’s best to go with a brand you trust.
Nothing lasts forever. The average home appliance lasts 10–20 years. While that’s a longer average life expectancy than it used to be, even the most dependable machines break down every now and again. That’s why it’s always best to examine the manufacturer’s warranty and consider adding extended service coverage to the unit at the time of purchase. These warranties can result in hundreds of dollars in savings, should any problems arise.
